Helolo! Bonjourono!

Its' been a sweet lovely second, which is truly par for the course. There's roughly two things I need to do an update on so I'll do that now!

The Festival Rumpus 2! came to a close at the start of this month. I didn't finish my entry, I started too late and bit off much more than I could chew when it came to terrain. I did make good progress very quickly but I underestimated my skill and speed when it came to painting! It didn't help I'd decided to sculpt a fairy as well. I felt a lot of guilt for not getting my fairy sculpted for last year's competition. I'm just a bit too lazy to post these in the right order so it looks like we're starting with...

Good Patrick Mumpoker

Good Patrick's name comes directly from the rules of Rumpus. You roll some dice and generate a name. Unlike last year (though I could have still used them) there wasn't descriptive rolling prompts for fairy design. Nothing wrong with that, I've got a brain so I let it run for a bit and came up with this froggy gentleman. The sketch is much better than the finished sculpt, due to my own limitations at miniature sculpting and just due the fact that a sketch, when pure of heart and creativity, will always be better than the iterations derived from it. This is always true. Despite that I think I did a decent job with the sculpt. In my mind, Good Patrick is the warden of this place, or something.

This was the sorry state of my board by the time the competition had ended. Hell, this was where it was a week AFTER the competition had ended. I'd reached a point of burnout and was loathe to push it to complete burnout. It looks fine, I wanted more moss on it. I'm still debating whether to flock it or paint the moss. There's no rush, hobby has no deadline even competitions have no deadline.  I'm trying to not psyche myself out!
there he is in the middle of the rumpus board
a few of the rumpus terrain pieces

I'm not UNPLEASED with the board by any stretch. In fact, I'm rather pleased with it. In another year it might even be finished! That would be a delight. Anyway, how about some process pictures? This was all built with pink foam, foam core sheets, cardboard, sticks, and stir sticks. I used some old basil for pre-flock texture and some dried moss for bushes. I think it sort of worked and I think it sort of didn't as well. That much basil and moss smells crazy, which I didn't enjoy.

very early on trying to figure things out

the first bricks

Now, this was two things but actually this is NOT the two things I was talking about. Festival Rumpus itself was the first thing and now I will talk about the second thing. That is:

Dopes for Sale

This is a bit overdue. There was a bit of pewter trimming what needed done and it was daunting to sit down and do, so it took me a bit to finish! But now it's finished and I got a set all painted up and looking pretty and WOW you can buy them now!

This post was a bit of a mouthful eh? Hopefully it wasn't boring. I hope you're doing well!

FaplADO (First and possibly last Annual Dessicated Dope Off) winners revealed

I'm beyond delayed with upkeeping the blog output. If you follow my instagram (I'd be surprised if you were here and didn't) you know the winners for the Dope Off have been announced. If you don't know that, well...

Terraining Arc

Hi, it's Festival Rumpus. There's a bit about making a Rumpus board and I have been meaning to make a 2'x2' board for Mischiev28 so I'm combining the two things into one! I had some sketches done up as an idea for my Mischiev board already, I wanted half buildings and half forest. I still want that, and I'm going to do my best. It's sort of going to be the edge of a town as the board I guess. I hope I get it done in time, if not I hope I get it done enough to want to finish it later! We'll see!

rough layout to see

I like the silhouette of this
Carving into foam sucks. Cutting into foam at all sucks. Making bricks sucks. I hate making terrain! But it's kind of rewarding watching things fit together. I have to make a couple buildings soon.
ah genius

Well that was all pretty exciting huh? Ok well that's it, hopefully will have Dope Off winner announcement in the next post! bye!

Fistful of Dopes

I've got a box full of pewter. Not to brag, of course. At last I've got my wonderful Dopes! It's been a bit over a year since I shipped them off and it's quite surreal to hold them in hand in their duplicated forms!

oo shiny

I'm having a pretty fun time painting them as well. It's quite interesting looking at these sculpts. I can tell I'm more of an adept sculptor than I was then. They were an important breakthrough in deciding to just go for it. I'm proud of my Dopes.

The casts need a bit of tlc while we wait for the First (and possibly last) Annual Dessicated Dope Off  to come to a close. As soon as I announce the winners, I'll list these for sale. It will either be two separate sets or the whole eight figures, I haven't decided yet. There is one consistently flawed cast which make me a bit apprehensive to charge a lot for these guys. I guess that's all there really is to say about it all!

Hope you're all doing well, don't forget to not drink your water!

Ah ah ah, it's time for an update

Friends, hello. It's been a minute! The DOPE OFF is over (it ended on the 28th of the last month.) I've been stunned by the entries, 25 in total! What an incredible feeling. Me and my cabinet of MISCHIEVOUS MEN are judging the entries and will have a verdict by the end of this month (July). Please look forward to it, and thank you for taking the time to paint a Mischievous Man! I'll save talking about the entries until a future blog post, but be assured I have thoughts and feelings about every entry!

Now for the important content. I've been painting a lot more. I turns out, I enjoy painting and I especially like painting when I don't have to think too hard about colors.

"Hey these aren't cool branded hobby paints from my favorite miniature paint company!"

It's really a simple palette. Two pairs of contrasting colors and white.  When combined make lovely neutrals for shading. Plus, I really really love how this green looks when it's mixed with white, makes a fantastic patina. And the orange is lovely for rust! I guess I should mention, I have used metallic paint as well from I THINK Army Painter. I can't be bothered to dig through the paint box to verify. Metallic paint is cool, someday I'll try to learn nonmetal metallic but I'm in no rush. Oh, I didn't take a picture of the one other color I use. Oops. Saffron Yellow from the same line.

progress

That egg guy in the front? Made him for the pal Matt's EGGBASH competition. Really happy with him, I sculpted the body out of beesputty and glued some (probably GW) arms to it. It painted really easy, my palette is a lifesaver.

What else... I did sculpt another snail knight. I need to get moving on sculpting more. I really enjoy making these guys, and that's the thing that I should let guide me. There's some science behind maintaining motivation when you consider the aspects of projects that you like over the aspects of doing things because you want to do them. So, I'll give that a go going forward.

What else what else... I continue to want to produce more minis in metal. I like pewter minis and I like seeing people paint my minis. Therefore, I should like both of those things enough to motivate me. I like the way I feel hyped up about this therefore it should motivate me! ANYWAY!

I suppose that's it for this blog post, hope it wasn't too much of an eyeful to read! I like blogging! I hope you're having a wonderful day and liking the things you do! Take care, forget to drink your water!

Snail Knight

Hello good morning! As the title suggests, we talking snail knights today. A few months back I posted some snails I made. I traded casts of those snails (among other things) at adepticon, after which I ended up casting a few more to ship out to friends I wasn't able to trade with during the convention. As a side note, I'm usually up for trades, so keep that in mind. Anyway, I did a trade with my wonderful friend Sid, otherwise know as awake_godnt. Do yourself a huge favor and peruse his page. As you do that, you'll see a slew of wonderful blue and yellow critters inhabiting the city of Innsmouth. Some of those critters have my snails as heads! I was absolutely stoked to see that done with my snails, I wasn't expecting it and the execution is just stunningly cool. Anyway, you know I love snails. A few days back I got a message from Sid on instagram with a picture of a sculpt he was working on of a beefy snail knight, and he asked if I wanted to collab on the sculpt, which I DO! Anyway, I did a bunch of doodles and instead ended up just making my own snail knight figure HAHAHA! I've gotta do something more kitbashy for the collab, but before that, here's the snail knight I made!

EPIC concept art

If you care, these doodles were done with a prismacolor premier marker. Very enjoyable doodle tool!

very detailed!

I'm not apologizing for the blurry pics, by the way. You get the gist. Hopefully if I get this cast up, you'll GET ONE because I'm very proud of this sculpt and think it will be a hoot to paint.

Hope you're having a wonderful day and forgetting to drink water! Stay dessicated, folks!

EDIT: and PLEASE don't forget about my wonderful contest ending at the end of the month!

Primed and ready

Hi again, you've likely come to expect this but here it is...

The second post.

Firstly, I recently dug up my old olympus digital camera. Something's in the air I guess. I'm making the decision to use it for everything going forward, hobbywise at least.

the OG Dappled Dopes 29rd

desk clutter
There's just something about it! Idunno! I never used flash with this back in the day, I hated flash! I did everything in my power to not use it. Now, I love it. It kind of washes everything out but also gives this great depth to a picture. I blame everyone at Adpeticon for this.

I made the big decision to bulk prime all my based minis (based on what?) so I can  hopefully get some painting momentum going. Dear reader, I have a pretty sick collection of minis. I'm not going to go into it but I'm a lucky boy, really I am. Anyway here's some pictures and that'll be the whole post haha!

now that's a box of minis!

Eh I also got some cheap storage things at Joanne's. I'm gonna go back and buy more. Organized a bit and I'm kind of hooked on it. Wow, order!

Ok well, there's your two posts :D

have a great weekend bye!
